By definition, censorship is the control of the information and ideas that circulate within a society. Especially in the current error, censorship has been applied in the examination of books, films, plays, television and radio programs, news reports and other such like forms of communication and schools regarding the information passed by teachers to the students. So to speak, the reason for censorship is geared at making an alteration or rather suppressing of ideas that are deemed as unpleasant or odious. In the same line of thought, the underlying principle of censorship has greatly varied as some censors target the material that is thought of to be filthy or obscene, profane or irreligious, and may be rebellious or treasonous (Müller 12) . This is basically a classification of the censorship in three directions. In this sense, censorship is associated with the family, church and the state in the larger perspective. This kind of gleaning information has been in use ever since time in memorial and has continued being in use with tremendous results.
Censorship on one side can be considered as a warranted norm but there are circumstances when its application may be unwarranted. In most cases, the information that may be circulating or that may be provided in the society affects the family, church and the state. Therefore, censorship is mostly carried out by those that are in authority especially in the three spheres of the society. It is important to control information to ensure that the right and beneficial information is released to the benefit of the nation (Müller 209). In accordance to this, censorship may in another way ensure a healthy nation with excellent practices and knowledge. In this context there are pros and cons of censorship as practice in the society.
Just as it has been briefly pointed out, the main goal of censorship is to glean out any information or any segment of the information that is considered indecent or obscene, disrespectful or irreligious, and may be rebellious or treasonous in the level of the state. In such a case, if information is controlled, it would be to the benefit of the society as whole and therefore its authenticity is valid. In relation to the definition of censorship, there are times and situations when censorship is appropriate. For instance, in a case whereby pornographic material is removed from a film or television, this helps the children or rather prevents the children from being morally corrupted. At the same time, censorship may reduce religious conflict by ensuring that a material that is considered insult to a particular religious group is eliminated (Sather 253).
Also, people may copy undesirable behaviours that they see in the TV or the movies and in such a case, censorship may prove appropriate. Accordingly, in the case of books, censorship may help eliminate the wrong information that may be portrayed about individuals or a particular group that may resolve to engage in violence as a result. Politically, censorship can help alleviate the politically motivated propagandas being carried out. Also, literature can be subjected to censorship to avoid the case like the case in Canadian literature (Mark 16).Again, in corporations or the manufacturing companies, censorship can prevent a company from spreading false information regarding their products. In addition to this, the application of censorship prevents the privacy of people, community and the state in the larger perspective. In the case of terrorists, they can be prevented from learning the technology that is detrimental to the existence of mankind. Violence in movies, broadcasting of violent events that may trigger violence, and other related information can be prevented through censorship. All these are examples of the situations when a censorship may prove to be so beneficial and warranted. This is due to the fact that in the state level it can provide for political correctness, religious correctness and the family wellbeing as well as the social morality of being shielded or rather protected(Hurwitz Day 272).
Despite the many situations that censorship may be warranted, there are also other situations when its definition is abused and made to be invalid. In such cases, its meaning by definition is abused in the sense that it is used in disguise in order to carry out selfish interests either by the family institution, the church unit and the State in the broader view. One may ask the reason why the three institutions are so important in a nation, but they are the backbone of the nation. Especially in an era like the current one, the prevalence of AIDs is great and children should be taught about sex related topics. In such a situation, censorship may be allowed despite the demand by parents to avoid such topics (Hurwitz Day 216).Again, dictators and the governments that are marked by the dictatorship do so that they may protect themselves in order to remain in authority without their wickedness being exposed. Moreover, the area of books plays and movies, the censorship may jeopardise the value of entertainment brought about by them.
There is a real world example in Afghanistan that has been carried out by the fundamentalists like Taliban who use censorship to coerce population. In a truly democratic society, corrupt censorship may not work and violates the dictates of democracy. In the case of children, withholding of information by parents may make them to be curious to an extent that they end up adapting undesirable characteristics that would have otherwise have not developed if the information were given to them and the dangers and the advantages brought into view. Generally, from a point of view of those that misuse the interpretation of the definition given to the term censorship, it can otherwise be a practice that breaks the flow of information in the society and a means to work dictatorship by a government and in the broader perspective, censorship may prove to be the causal effect of many undesirable and rebellious behaviours that are being practiced by church, family and state in the current error.
However important it may seem, the disadvantages are equally detrimental. Censorship has proved to be a limiting factor to creativity and in particular to book writers, production of music, films, TV shows and others as such (Sather 73). This does not disregard the effects of releasing uncensored information since there is a lot of indecent information that when released it may no be appropriate to the society as whole. As a result, censorship proves to be a very controversial issue that calls for international debate on whether it should be made legal or not. Taking the example of the MPAA, being an organization that carries out censorship, it has the parental responsibility to ensure that children watch the right movies. Once a movie is produced, producers take it to them and they rate it and if there are segments that are found to be obscene or indecent or otherwise they would corrupt the morality of the children, it is excluded and the producer given. If not satisfied, he or she may appeal. In such like an organization, censorship is carried out under rules and regulations without corruption.
Nevertheless, in such an organization, censorship then retains the definition given without being biased following selfish pursuits. In connection to what MPAA organization which deals with censorship of movies offers one of the definitions that best suits the definition given, since the control of information is done for the benefit of the society or rather for a common goal and not selfish quest for dictators as shown in the examples given. Regarding the definition given, censorship can be of great benefit if rules and regulations apply. This is to suggest that it should be made legal and corruption in the area should be dealt with. The ones eligible should be the ones who are committed to serve the interests of all rather than self interests. Since it is carried out by authorities, dishonesty and corruption should not be allowed. As such, censorship would be a yielding practice for a growing nation that understands the situations when it is appropriate and when not; since if not appropriately used can limit the flow of information and thus prevent the development of the society.
